Laguna de Itá, Ita, Paraguay, South America
Laguna de Itá is a natural lagoon located in the city of Itá, Paraguay. It is a significant freshwater body within the region.
Visual Characteristics
The lagoon's water exhibits a greenish-brown hue, influenced by sediment and aquatic vegetation. The surrounding terrain consists of low-lying plains with sparse to moderate vegetation, primarily grasses and scattered trees. The shoreline is generally unpaved, with areas of mud and sand.
Location & Access Logistics
Laguna de Itá is situated approximately 10 kilometers west of the center of Itá. Access is via National Route 1 (Ruta Nacional 1) for 8 kilometers, then turning north onto a secondary unpaved road for 2 kilometers. Parking is available on the unpaved shoulder adjacent to the lagoon. Public transport to Itá city is available via bus lines from Asunción; however, direct public transport to the lagoon itself is not provided.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The lagoon is a natural depression that collects rainwater and runoff from the surrounding lowlands. It is classified as a shallow freshwater wetland, part of the Paraná River basin's hydrological system. Its formation is attributed to natural geomorphological processes over an extended period.
Key Highlights & Activities
Fishing is a common activity for local residents. Birdwatching is possible due to the presence of various waterfowl species. The area is suitable for informal picnicking.
Infrastructure & Amenities
No formal infrastructure is present at the lagoon. Restrooms, shade structures, and food vendors are not available directly at the site. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is intermittent and generally weak.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for birdwatching is during the early morning or late afternoon. The dry season, from May to September, generally offers more stable weather conditions. Water levels can fluctuate significantly with rainfall; visiting after periods of rain will result in higher water levels.
Facts & Legends
Local folklore suggests that the lagoon was formed by the tears of a woman who was transformed into a stone statue after being abandoned by her lover. The statue is said to be visible during periods of extremely low water levels.
