Lake Kittamaqundi is a man-made reservoir located in Columbia, Maryland, USA.

It serves as a central feature of the planned community and provides recreational opportunities.

Visual Characteristics

The lake has an irregular shape with a surface area of approximately 27 acres. Its water color varies from greenish-brown to blue depending on recent rainfall and algal bloom activity. The shoreline is predominantly lined with mowed grass, interspersed with mature deciduous trees such as oaks and maples. Several small, rocky outcroppings are visible along the western and southern edges. The maximum depth is approximately 15 feet.

Location & Access Logistics

Lake Kittamaqundi is situated in the geographic center of Columbia, Maryland. It is accessible via multiple entry points from major roadways. From US Route 29, take the exit for Broken Land Parkway and proceed south. Turn right onto Lakefront Drive, which provides direct access to parking areas. Several designated parking lots surround the lake, offering ample space for vehicles. Public transportation is available via the Columbia Association (CA) bus system; Route 3 stops within a 0.2km walk of the lake's northern edge.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Lake Kittamaqundi was constructed in 1967 as part of James Rouse's vision for Columbia, a planned new town. It was designed by architect and urban planner Lawrence Halprin. The lake's primary purpose was to serve as a central recreational amenity and a stormwater management system for the surrounding development. Ecologically, it is an artificial impoundment created by damming a tributary of the Little Patuxent River.

Key Highlights & Activities

Kayaking and paddleboarding are permitted on the lake. Fishing is allowed, with species including largemouth bass and bluegill. A paved multi-use path encircles the lake, suitable for walking, jogging, and cycling. The Columbia Association offers boat rentals during warmer months. Birdwatching is a common activity, with various waterfowl species present.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the Lakefront Pavilion and the nearby Merriweather Post Pavilion. Shaded areas are provided by numerous mature trees along the walking path. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong throughout the area. Food vendors are not permanently stationed at the lake, but concessions are often available during events at Merriweather Post Pavilion or at nearby retail centers.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning or late afternoon offers optimal lighting conditions due to lower sun angles. The best months for outdoor activities are April through October, when temperatures are mild. High tide is not a relevant factor for this freshwater lake. Peak visitor times are weekend afternoons during summer.

Facts & Legends

The name "Kittamaqundi" is derived from an Algonquin word meaning "gathering place." A local anecdote suggests that the lake's depth was intentionally designed to be shallow enough to prevent large, deep-water fish from inhabiting it, thus simplifying fishing for families.
