The Likiep Canal is a man-made waterway located on Likiep Atoll in the Marshall Islands. It connects the lagoon to the open ocean.

Visual Characteristics

The canal is approximately 10 meters wide and 3 meters deep. Its sides are reinforced with coral rock and concrete. The water within the canal is typically clear, with visibility dependent on tidal conditions. Surrounding vegetation consists of coconut palms and low-lying shrubs.

Location & Access Logistics

The Likiep Canal is situated on Likiep Atoll, approximately 1.5 kilometers east of the main village. Access is via a dirt path from the village, a walk of about 20 minutes. There is no designated parking. Local boat operators can provide transport to the canal's entrance from other parts of the atoll.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the Likiep Canal began in 1938 and was completed in 1940. It was commissioned by the Japanese administration of the Marshall Islands to facilitate the transport of copra from the interior of the atoll to ships anchored offshore. The canal was excavated through existing coral and sand formations.

Key Highlights & Activities

Fishing is a primary activity within the canal, particularly during tidal changes. Small boat navigation is possible for local residents. Observation of marine life entering and exiting the lagoon can be done from the canal banks.

Infrastructure & Amenities

There are no formal amenities at the Likiep Canal. Restrooms are not available. Shade is limited to natural vegetation. Cell phone signal is intermittent.

Best Time to Visit

The canal is most active for fishing during incoming and outgoing tides, typically early morning and late afternoon. The dry season, from December to April, offers the most consistent weather conditions.

Facts & Legends

Local accounts suggest that during its construction, workers discovered ancient shell tools buried along the canal's path, indicating prior human activity in the area.
