Lumbarda Beaches, Korcula, Croatia, Europe
Lumbarda is a village on the eastern tip of Korčula island, famous for being one of the few locations in the Dalmatian archipelago with natural sandy beaches.
Primary Sandy Beaches
Lumbarda features three distinct sandy coves, each with unique orientations and characteristics:
Vela Pržina: The largest and most popular sandy beach on the island. It faces south toward the open sea and the island of Lastovo.
Characteristics: Fine golden sand, shallow waters extending far into the bay, and protection from the northern "Bura" wind.
Facilities: Beach bars, fast food, and rentals for sunbeds/parasols.
Bilin Žal: Located on the northern side of the Lumbarda peninsula, facing the Pelješac Peninsula and the Korčula archipelago.
Characteristics: Mix of sand and stone slabs. The water is clear and slightly cooler than at Vela Pržina due to currents in the Pelješac Channel.
Facilities: A restaurant (Konoba Bilin Žal) housed in a historic stone building and a small café.
Tatinja: A smaller sandy beach located in a sheltered bay within a 5-minute walk of the village center.
Characteristics: Offers views of the nearby islets (Vrnik and Gubavac). It is popular for quick swims and for families staying in the village.
Alternative Coastline
Lenga and Ražnjić: Moving east from Bilin Žal toward the tip of the island, the coast turns to white limestone slabs and rocky coves. These areas offer deep, crystal-clear water and higher privacy, making them ideal for snorkeling and diving.
Prvi Žal: A pebble beach located directly in the center of the village near the marina, offering easy access to local cocktail bars and restaurants.
Location & Access Logistics
Lumbarda is situated 6km southeast of Korcula-old-town_korcula" class="underline">Korčula Old Town.
Bus: A regular local bus runs approximately every hour between Korčula Town and Lumbarda (15-minute journey).
Taxi Boat: Water taxis operate from the Korčula Town harbor directly to the Lumbarda piers and beaches.
Cycling/Walking: A scenic road through vineyards and pine forests connects the two towns; cycling takes roughly 20–30 minutes.
Parking: Both Vela Pržina and Bilin Žal have large, paid parking lots nearby during the summer season.
Context & Tips
The "Grk" Vineyards: The sandy soil surrounding these beaches is unique to Lumbarda and is the only place in the world where the Grk grape variety is grown. Most paths to the beaches pass directly through these historic vineyards.
Natural Shade: Most of the sandy beaches lack significant natural shade; renting a parasol or bringing a beach tent is recommended.
Crowds: Due to the rarity of sand in Croatia, these beaches can become very crowded in July and August. Visiting before 10:00 or after 17:00 is advised for a more quiet experience.
