The coastline features long stretches of light-colored sand, with shallow, clear turquoise waters in many areas. Volcanic rock formations are present in some coastal sections.
Location & Access Logistics
The primary access point is the small airport, Maio Airport (NMA), located 5 kilometers west of Porto Inglês. Flights connect Maio to Santiago (Praia) and Sal. Ferry services also operate between Maio and Santiago, docking at the Porto Inglês port. Porto Inglês is the main settlement and is accessible via a paved road from the airport. Parking is available in designated areas within Porto Inglês.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Maio Island is of volcanic origin, formed by basaltic lava flows. It was discovered by Portuguese explorers in 1472. Historically, the island was utilized for salt production and cattle ranching due to its arid climate. Its ecological classification is a semi-arid island ecosystem.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include exploring the beaches of Ponta Preta and Praia da Vila for sunbathing and walking. Birdwatching is possible in the island's interior, particularly for migratory species. Snorkeling and diving are feasible in calmer coastal areas. Walking tours of Porto Inglês to observe the colonial architecture are available.

Porto Inglês has basic infrastructure, including a small market, a few restaurants, and guesthouses. Restrooms are available at some beach access points and within Porto Inglês. Shade is limited outside of settlements. Cell phone signal (2G/3G) is generally available in Porto Inglês and along main routes, but can be intermittent elsewhere.
Best Time to Visit
The best months for visiting are from November to June, avoiding the peak of the rainy season (August-October). The island experiences consistent trade winds, making it suitable for water activities. For photography, early morning and late afternoon offer softer light on the beaches.
Facts & Legends
Maio Island was once a significant producer of salt, with salt pans still visible in some areas. A local legend speaks of a hidden freshwater spring in the island's interior, though its existence is unverified.
