From Stung Treng, travel north on Route 7 for approximately 10 kilometers, then turn right onto a local road signposted for Kampi village. Parking is available at designated points near Kampi village. Boat tours are the primary method of accessing dolphin viewing areas; these can be hired from Kampi village.

The Mekong River dolphin (Orcaella brevirostris) is a subspecies of the Irrawaddy dolphin. Its presence in the Mekong River is a result of adaptation to freshwater environments. The habitat is ecologically classified as a freshwater riverine ecosystem. Conservation efforts for this population began in the early 2000s due to declining numbers.
