Memorial of Skanderbeg, Lezhe, Albania, Europe
The Memorial of Skanderbeg (Memoriali i Varrit të Skënderbeut) is a historical monument and burial site located in the center of Lezhë. It is built over the ruins of the 15th-century Cathedral of Saint Nicholas, where the Albanian national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti Skanderbeg, was interred in 1468.
Visual Characteristics
The memorial consists of a high-roofed, open-sided stone pavilion designed in a modern neoclassical style that encloses the excavated ruins of the original church. Inside, a symbolic tomb is covered by a marble slab, surrounded by 25 bronze shields and a replica of Skanderbeg's sword and helmet. The structure utilizes white limestone and features large glass panels and a wooden ceiling supported by steel columns.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is located on Rruga Varri i Skënderbeut in the lower city of Lezhë, approximately 500 meters from the Drin River. It is easily accessible from the SH1 highway connecting Tirana and Shkodër. Public buses and minibuses (furgons) from northern and central Albania stop at the central Lezhë terminal, a 10-minute walk from the memorial. Paved street parking is available in the surrounding municipal lots.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The original site was a Franciscan cathedral built in the 14th century. After Skanderbeg’s death in 1468, his remains were buried here, but the tomb was later desecrated by Ottoman soldiers in 1478. The current memorial structure was inaugurated in 1981, designed by architects looking to preserve the remaining medieval walls while providing a monumental enclosure.
Key Highlights & Activities
Guided historical tours are conducted daily, focusing on the history of the League of Lezhë. Visitors can examine the original 15th-century masonry and frescoes remaining on the cathedral walls. Photography is permitted within the enclosure. The site is a focal point for national celebrations every March 2nd (anniversary of the League) and January 17th (anniversary of his death).
Infrastructure & Amenities
The memorial is located within a manicured park that includes paved walkways and benches. There are no restrooms inside the monument itself, but public facilities are available in the adjacent municipal park and nearby cafes. The area is covered by full 5G cellular signal. Signage is provided in both Albanian and English.
Best Time to Visit
The memorial is best visited during morning hours (09:00–12:00) when natural light enters the open pavilion, illuminating the bronze shields. The site is open year-round, though the spring months offer the best weather for walking the surrounding park.
Facts & Legends
According to historical accounts by Marin Barleti, when Ottoman soldiers captured Lezhë in 1478, they opened Skanderbeg's tomb and took pieces of his bones to be encased in silver and gold, wearing them as talismans for strength in battle. A specific tip for visitors is to look for the original Byzantine-style fresco fragments on the northern interior wall, which survived the 15th-century destruction.
