Mikumi National Park is a protected area located in the Morogoro Region of Tanzania. It is situated approximately 283 kilometers southwest of Dar es Salaam.
Visual Characteristics
The park's landscape is characterized by a large, alluvial plain that dominates the central and western sections, bordered by the Mkata River flood plain. Vegetation includes grasslands, acacia woodlands, and miombo woodlands. Wildlife is readily visible across the open plains.
Location & Access Logistics
Access is primarily via the A7 highway (Dar es Salaam-Iringa Road), which bisects the park. The journey from Dar es Salaam takes approximately 4-5 hours by road. There are no direct public transport services into the park; private vehicles or organized safari tours are required. Parking is available at park entrance gates and designated picnic sites.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Mikumi National Park was established in 1964. It is part of the larger Selous ecosystem and serves as a vital corridor for wildlife migration between the Selous Game Reserve and Ruaha National Park. The park's ecological significance lies in its role as a habitat for a diverse range of mammal and bird species.
Key Highlights & Activities
Game drives are the primary activity, with opportunities to observe elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, and various antelope species. Birdwatching is also a significant activity. Walking safaris are permitted in designated areas under ranger escort.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Basic facilities are available at the park entrance gates, including restrooms and information centers. Several lodges and tented camps are located within or adjacent to the park boundaries, offering dining services. Cell phone signal is intermittent within the park.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season, from June to October, offers the best wildlife viewing as animals congregate around water sources and vegetation is less dense. The period from December to February is also favorable. The best time of day for photography is early morning and late afternoon when light is softer.
Facts & Legends
Mikumi is often referred to as "Little Serengeti" due to its open plains and abundant wildlife. A specific point of interest is the "Hippo Pool," a natural waterhole where hippos are consistently visible.
