Molen van Piet, Alkmaar, Netherlands, Europe
Molen van Piet (Piet’s Mill), officially known as De Groot, is a historic stone flour mill located on the Clarissenbolwerk, part of the ancient city fortifications of Alkmaar.
Visual Characteristics
The structure is a "round stone gallery mill" (ronde stenen stellingmolen) characterized by its tapered brick body and a wooden gallery (balcony) encircling the mid-section. It is topped by a thatched cap and four sails. The exterior is notable for its position atop a grassy rampart, making it a dominant feature of the Alkmaar skyline.
Location & Access Logistics
Address: Clarissenbolwerk 1, 1811 MN Alkmaar.
Access: It is located at the southwestern edge of the historic city center. It is a 10-minute walk (800m) from the Waagplein and a 12-minute walk from Alkmaar Central Station.
Entry: The interior of the mill functions as a private residence and is not open to the public for tours. The exterior is fully accessible via the public walking paths of the city park.
Parking: The nearest parking is the Parkeergarage De Vest or Singelgarage.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Built in 1769 on the site of a former wooden mill, it was originally used to grind grain for the citizens of Alkmaar. It stands on a "bolwerk" (bastion), which provided the mill with an unobstructed wind catch above the city walls. In 1884, the Piet family purchased the mill; they have lived in and maintained the structure for four generations, giving it its popular name.
Key Highlights & Activities
Photography: The mill is one of the most photographed landmarks in Alkmaar, particularly from across the Singel canal, where its reflection is visible in the water.
The Singel Walk: The mill is a primary stop on the "Alkmaarse Bolwerken" walking route, a green belt that follows the old city defenses.
Molenwinkel: Historically, the family operated a small shop at the base of the mill; while the mill no longer grinds commercially, the family remains the official "voluntary millers."
Infrastructure & Amenities
Surroundings: The mill is located within a public park. There are benches and paved paths suitable for walking and cycling.
Dining: There are no facilities inside the mill. Cafes and restaurants are located 200 meters away toward the Ritsevoort and Grote Kerk area.
Accessibility: The park paths leading to the base of the mill are wheelchair accessible.
Best Time to Visit
The mill is best viewed during the "National Mill Days" (Nationale Molendagen) in May, when it is decorated and the sails are typically turning. For photography, late afternoon lighting from the west highlights the brickwork and the sails against the park greenery.
Facts & Legends
A verified historical detail is that the mill survived the systematic demolition of Alkmaar's city walls in the 19th century because of its vital role in food production. A local legend suggests that the millers used the position of the sails to send "secret codes" to the townspeople during times of war or celebration, a traditional practice known as "molentaal" (mill language).
