Molundu Falls, Buea, Cameroon, Africa
Molundu Falls is a waterfall located in the Mount Cameroon National Park, near Buea, Cameroon.
The falls descend over a series of dark, volcanic rock formations, creating multiple tiers of water flow. The surrounding vegetation is dense rainforest, characterized by large ferns and broadleaf trees.
Location & Access Logistics
Molundu Falls is situated approximately 15 kilometers north of Buea. Access is via the Molyko-Bokwango road, turning onto a dirt track approximately 3 kilometers past Bokwango village. This track is passable by 4x4 vehicles. Parking is available at the trailhead, with capacity for approximately 10 vehicles. Public transport to Bokwango village is available via local minibuses (moto-taxi services operate from Bokwango to the trailhead).
Historical & Ecological Origin
The falls are a result of erosion acting upon the volcanic rock of Mount Cameroon. The area is part of the Mount Cameroon National Park, established to protect the unique biodiversity of the region's volcanic ecosystem.
Key Highlights & Activities
Hiking to the base of the falls is the primary activity. The trail is approximately 2 kilometers one-way and involves moderate elevation gain. Swimming is possible in the plunge pool at the base of the main cascade during dry seasons. Observation points are available at various levels along the trail.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no permanent facilities at Molundu Falls. Visitors should carry their own water and food. Cell phone signal is intermittent to non-existent within the park. No food vendors are present at the trailhead or the falls.
Best Time to Visit
The best time for photography is during the morning hours (08:00-11:00) when sunlight filters through the canopy. The dry season, from November to March, offers the most stable weather conditions and lower water flow, making the trails safer. During the rainy season (April to October), water flow increases significantly, and trails can become slippery and overgrown.
Facts & Legends
Local folklore suggests that the water from Molundu Falls possesses healing properties. A specific tip for visitors is to wear sturdy, waterproof footwear due to the consistently damp conditions and potential for muddy sections on the trail.
