Montagne de Bueren, Liege, Belgium, Europe
The Montagne de Bueren is a monumental staircase located in the historic heart of Liège. It is recognized as one of the most famous and challenging pedestrian climbs in Europe.
Visual Characteristics
The structure consists of 374 stone steps rising at a steep 30% incline. The staircase is flanked by traditional brick houses and provides a direct vertical link from the district of Hors-Château to the Citadel heights. From the base, the stairs create a dramatic perspective of converging lines reaching toward the sky.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is located at Montagne de Bueren, 4000 Liège.
Base Access: Starts at the street Hors-Château, near the center of the old town.
Public Transport: 15-minute walk from the Liège-Saint-Lambert train station.
Parking: Nearest parking is Parking Hors-Château or Parking Cité.
Access: The staircase is a public thoroughfare and is free to access 24/7. It is not wheelchair or stroller accessible due to the extreme incline and number of steps.
Historical Origin
Built in 1881, the staircase was designed to allow soldiers stationed at the Citadel to reach the city center quickly and safely without navigating the narrow, dangerous alleys of the medieval district. It is named after Vincent de Bueren, a 15th-century nobleman who led a heroic but unsuccessful defense of Liège against the Duke of Burgundy, Charles the Bold.
Key Highlights & Activities
The Summit View: The top offers a panoramic vista of the city of Liège and the Meuse River valley.
Monument to the 12th Line: At the top of the stairs, a monument commemorates the soldiers of the Belgian 12th Line Regiment.
Bueren is de Kunst: An occasional event where the steps are decorated with thousands of flowers or art installations.
Nocturne des Coteaux de la Citadelle: Held on the first Saturday of October, where the entire staircase is illuminated by thousands of candles.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are benches at various intervals for resting during the ascent. At the base, the Hors-Château district is densely populated with cafes and artisanal shops. 5G signal is robust at both the base and the summit.
Best Time to Visit
The climb is best attempted in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid direct midday sun and peak tourist crowds. During winter, the steps can become slippery; caution is advised during frost or rain.
Facts & Legends
Despite its name ("Mountain"), it is purely a staircase. It was ranked #1 on the Huffington Post's list of "Most Extreme Staircases" in 2013. A local tradition involves residents and athletes using the stairs for high-intensity endurance training.
