Historical & Ecological Origin

The original Hommaru Palace was constructed in 1612 for Tokugawa Ieyasu. It served as the residence of the Owari Tokugawa family, lords of the Nagoya domain. The palace was destroyed by fire during an air raid in 1945. The current structure is a faithful reconstruction completed in 2018, utilizing traditional building techniques and materials.

The Grand Hall features a raised platform for the lord. Demonstrations of traditional crafts may be offered. Photography is permitted in designated areas.

Best Time to Visit

The palace is open from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, with last admission at 4:00 PM. Weekday mornings generally have fewer visitors. The interior lighting is artificial, so time of day does not significantly impact visual experience. The palace is accessible year-round, though spring (March-May) and autumn (September-November) offer pleasant outdoor conditions for exploring the castle grounds.

Facts & Legends

A notable feature of the reconstructed palace is the use of approximately 10,000 sheets of gold leaf for its interior decoration, mirroring the opulence of the original structure. Local lore suggests that the original palace was designed to impress visiting dignitaries and assert the power of the Tokugawa shogunate.
