Historical & Ecological Origin
The arch is a karst formation, created over millions of years by the erosive action of Cedar Creek cutting through the Silurian-era limestone. It was a significant site for Native American tribes, including the Monacan people, who considered it a sacred place. Thomas Jefferson purchased the land in 1774, and it was a popular tourist destination throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can walk beneath the arch via a paved path. The park offers hiking trails, including the Cedar Creek Trail which leads to the Monacan Village reconstruction and Lace Falls. Photography of the arch and surrounding gorge is a primary activity. Ranger-led programs are offered seasonally.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available near the visitor center and parking area. Shaded areas are present along the Cedar Creek Trail. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available within the park. Food vendors are typically located at the visitor center or nearby establishments outside the park boundaries.
Best Time to Visit
For optimal lighting on the arch, late morning or mid-afternoon is recommended. The best months for visiting are April through October, offering mild weather. Cedar Creek's water levels can vary; higher water flow is more common in spring and after heavy rainfall.
Facts & Legends
Legend states that George Washington surveyed the Natural Bridge, though historical records are inconclusive. A unique feature is the "Devil's Bathtub," a deep pool in Cedar Creek downstream from the bridge, known for its swirling currents.
