Neum Harbor (Luka Neum) is the primary maritime facility of Bosnia and Herzegovina, located in the southern part of the Neum-Klek Bay. It functions primarily as a marina for local fishing boats, tourist excursion vessels, and private yachts, rather than as a commercial industrial port.

Visual Characteristics

The harbor is defined by a series of concrete piers and stone-reinforced breakwaters. It features a concentrated arrangement of small-to-medium wooden and fiberglass boats. The water within the harbor is typically emerald or deep blue and remains exceptionally still due to the protection provided by the Klek Peninsula. The surrounding landscape consists of steep, limestone hills densely packed with white-walled hotels and apartments overlooking the docks.

Location & Access Logistics

The harbor is situated at the western end of the main coastal promenade (Ulica Dr. Franje Tuđmana). It is directly accessible on foot from the central hotel zone and the main beach. For those arriving by vehicle from the M-2 or M-17.3 highways, limited parking is available in the "Port" area or in the larger lots near the Hotel Zenit. The site is approximately 1 km from the Neum City Square.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Historically, the bay served as a minor anchorage for the Ottoman fleet and later for Austro-Hungarian coastal patrols. The modern harbor infrastructure was developed alongside the town's expansion into a tourist resort in the late 20th century. Geologically, it sits in a natural deep-water bay. The ecology is characterized by a closed marine system with low wave energy, making it a stable environment for Mediterranean marine life and shellfish.

It is surrounded by the highest concentration of seafood restaurants and specialized fish taverns in the town. 5G cellular coverage is excellent. Public restrooms and showers are located in the adjacent beach facilities. The area is level and wheelchair accessible compared to the terraced "Upper Neum."

Best Time to Visit

The harbor is most visually striking at sunrise or sunset when the light reflects off the calm bay water. Early morning (06:00–08:00) is the best time to observe local fishermen returning with their catch. During the peak summer months (July–August), the harbor is the most active hub for evening social activity.

Facts & Legends

Despite periodic political discussions regarding the construction of a major deep-water cargo port in Neum, the harbor remains a dedicated tourist and local fishery zone to preserve the bay's ecological status and tourism-driven economy.
