Construction of the stadium, originally named Reliant Stadium, began in 2000 and was completed in 2002. It was designed by architectural firms HOK Sport + Venue + Event and Kendall/Heaton Associates. The original purpose was to provide a modern home for the Houston Texans and a larger venue for the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.
