Ocean Beach Park was established in 1933. The park was developed on land that was formerly part of the U.S. Naval Submarine Base New London. The carousel building was constructed in 1948 and is a contributing structure to the Ocean Beach Historic District, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The beach itself is a barrier beach system, formed by coastal processes.
