Old Town of Sandanski, Sandanski, Bulgaria, Europe
The Old Town of Sandanski is an integrated archaeological and residential zone situated in the central and northeastern portions of Sandanski, Bulgaria. It encompasses the remains of the ancient Roman city of Parthicopolis and the subsequent 19th-century Bulgarian National Revival settlements.
Visual Characteristics
The area features a mix of exposed stone foundations from the 4th to 6th centuries and two-story residential buildings with overhanging timber eaves. Street surfaces consist of authentic cobblestone and modern granite paving. Terrain elevation rises toward the Pirin Mountains, characterized by terraced gardens and dense Mediterranean-style vegetation including plane trees and sandanskis bori.
Location & Access Logistics
The district is centered around the Makedoniya Street pedestrian zone, approximately 1.5km East of the E79 international highway. Access is primarily on foot from the Sandanski Bus Station via ul. "Skopie". Paid parking zones are located at the perimeter on ul. "Sveti Nikola" and near the Interhotel Sandanski.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The site originated as a Thracian settlement before becoming the Roman city of Parthicopolis in the 2nd century AD. It sits upon a geothermal fault line, providing natural mineral springs that have dictated the urban layout for two millennia. Modern reconstruction and preservation efforts focused on the Early Christian Episcopal Basilica began in the mid-20th century.
Key Highlights & Activities
Walking tours of the Archaeological Park allow for the inspection of Roman mosaics and thermal bath foundations. Public mineral water fountains are available for free consumption at the Fontana site. The City Park "Sveti Vrach" provides 7km of paved walking trails starting at the northern edge of the old district.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Public benches and waste receptacles are situated every 50 meters along the main pedestrian thoroughfare. 5G cellular signal is consistent across all Bulgarian mobile networks. Public restrooms are located within the Archaeological Museum and near the entrance to the Sveti Vrach Park. Food vendors and pharmacies are concentrated on ul. "Makedoniya".
Best Time to Visit
The optimal period for photography of the Roman ruins is 08:00 to 10:00 to avoid harsh vertical shadows. May, June, and September offer the most favorable climate, as mid-summer temperatures frequently exceed 35°C. The Archaeological Museum is closed on Mondays.
Facts & Legends
Local tradition identifies this specific urban area as the birthplace of Spartacus, the leader of the Roman gladiator revolt, who belonged to the Maedi tribe that inhabited this valley. A verified historical oddity is the presence of a 500-year-old plane tree in the center which has been designated a protected natural monument.
