Oudong Temple, Kandal, Cambodia, Asia

Oudong Temple is a historical complex located in Kandal Province, Cambodia.

It served as the capital of Cambodia from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

Visual Characteristics

The complex consists of several stupas and temples constructed primarily from brick and sandstone. The main structures are situated on the slopes of Phnom Oudong, a hill. The stupas are conical in shape, with tiered bases. Some structures exhibit remnants of stucco and carvings. Vegetation is present on the hill, with trees and shrubs surrounding the temple sites.

Location & Access Logistics

Oudong Temple is situated approximately 40 kilometers northwest of Phnom Penh. Access is via National Road 5, then turning onto local roads leading to the base of Phnom Oudong. The journey from Phnom Penh typically takes 1 to 1.5 hours by car. Parking is available at the base of the hill. Public transport options are limited; shared taxis or private car hire from Phnom Penh are the most direct methods. Local tuk-tuks may be available from nearby towns.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Oudong was established as the royal capital by King Srey Soryatey in 1618. It remained the capital until 1866 when King Norodom moved the capital to Phnom Penh. The structures are primarily Buddhist religious sites, with stupas housing the remains of former Cambodian kings. The hill itself is a natural geological formation.

Key Highlights & Activities

Climbing the steps to the summit of Phnom Oudong provides access to the main stupas. Visitors can explore the various temple structures and observe the architectural details. Observing the panoramic views of the surrounding countryside from the hilltop is a primary activity. Photography of the stupas and the landscape is common.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the base of the hill. Shade is limited on the ascent and at the summit, primarily provided by natural tree cover. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available. Food vendors are typically present at the base of the hill, offering local snacks and drinks.

Best Time to Visit

The best time of day for photography is in the late afternoon, approximately 2-3 hours before sunset, for optimal lighting on the structures and landscape. The dry season, from November to April, offers the most favorable weather conditions. There are no tide-specific requirements for visiting.

Facts & Legends

One of the prominent stupas, the Srey Soryatey Stupa, is said to contain the ashes of King Srey Soryatey. A local belief suggests that making a wish while looking at the main stupas can lead to its fulfillment. The site has also been subject to damage and restoration efforts throughout its history.
