Historical & Ecological Origin

The Hudson River Palisades are a geological formation of steep cliffs composed of Mesozoic diabase. The park itself was established in the early 20th century as part of a larger effort to preserve the Palisades. The original purpose was to prevent quarrying and industrial development along the riverfront.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting conditions for photography, visit during the early morning or late afternoon. The months of April through October offer the most pleasant weather. No tide-dependent activities are relevant to this park.

A local legend states that the cliffs were formed by a giant who threw rocks at his enemies. Geologically, the cliffs are the result of ancient volcanic activity and subsequent erosion.
