The resort spans multiple mountainsides, featuring a mix of coniferous and deciduous trees. Ski runs are graded by color (green, blue, black) indicating difficulty. The base area includes several multi-story buildings constructed with wood and stone, featuring pitched roofs designed to handle snow load. Elevation ranges from approximately 6,800 feet (2,070 m) at the base to over 10,000 feet (3,050 m) at the summit.
Location & Access Logistics
Park City Mountain Resort is situated approximately 32 miles (51 km) east of Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC). Access from Salt Lake City is via Interstate 80 East to U.S. Route 40 East, then onto State Route 224. The resort has multiple parking areas, including paid surface lots and garages at the main base area. Public transport is available via the free Park City Transit system, with multiple bus routes serving the resort, including Route 7 and Route 10.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The resort officially opened in 1963 as Treasure Mountain Resort. It was later renamed Park City Ski Area and merged with neighboring Canyons Resort in 2015 to form the current Park City Mountain Resort. The area's ecology is characterized by montane ecosystems, with vegetation including aspen, fir, and pine trees. The geological formation is part of the Wasatch Range, known for its sedimentary rock layers.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include skiing and snowboarding during the winter season, with over 7,300 acres of skiable terrain. Summer activities include alpine slides, zip lines, mountain biking on designated trails, and scenic gondola rides. The resort offers various terrain parks for freestyle skiing and snowboarding.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The resort base areas provide restrooms, food and beverage outlets, and retail shops. Several on-mountain lodges offer dining and rest facilities. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available throughout the resort, though it may vary in remote areas. Shade is available from trees on hiking and biking trails during warmer months.
Best Time to Visit
For skiing and snowboarding, the season typically runs from late November to mid-April, dependent on snowfall. Mid-January to late February often provides the most consistent snow conditions. For summer activities, June through September offers the best weather. Mid-morning provides optimal lighting for photography of the mountain landscape.
Facts & Legends
A historical oddity is the presence of the historic Silver King Mine, a former silver mine, whose remnants are still visible in some areas of the resort. The resort's expansion through the acquisition of Canyons Resort created the largest single ski resort in the United States.
