For photography, early morning or late afternoon light provides optimal illumination of the glaciers. High tide is not a relevant factor for glacier viewing. Weather can be variable year-round, with strong winds common.

The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the few glaciers in the world that is advancing. Its advance periodically dams the southern arm of Lago Argentino, creating a natural dam. When the water pressure becomes too great, the dam ruptures in a spectacular event known as the "rupture of the Perito Moreno Glacier."
