Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, El Calafate, Argentina, South America

Parque Nacional Los Glaciares is a protected area in the Patagonian region of Argentina. It encompasses a significant portion of the Southern Patagonian Ice Field.

Visual Characteristics

The park features numerous glaciers, including the Perito Moreno Glacier, which is characterized by its active calving events. The ice exhibits shades of white and blue, with exposed rock faces of granite and sedimentary rock. The surrounding landscape includes steppe vegetation, Andean forests (primarily lenga and ñire trees), and glacial lakes such as Lago Argentino and Lago Viedma, which are milky turquoise due to glacial silt.

Location & Access Logistics

The park is located approximately 80 kilometers northwest of El Calafate, Santa Cruz Province, Argentina. Access is primarily via National Route 11 and Provincial Route 15. El Calafate has an international airport (Comandante Armando Tola International Airport - FTE). Within the park, there are designated parking areas at key viewpoints, such as the Perito Moreno Glacier walkways. Public transport options include tour buses departing from El Calafate, with specific routes to the Perito Moreno Glacier. Boat tours operate on Lago Argentino and Lago Viedma.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Parque Nacional Los Glaciares was established on May 11, 1937, to preserve the Patagonian Ice Field and its associated ecosystems. The glaciers are remnants of the last ice age, formed by accumulated snowfall over millennia. The park's ecological classification is primarily Andean-Patagonian steppe and subantarctic forest, with a significant cryosphere component.

Key Highlights & Activities

Activities include observing glacier calving at the Perito Moreno Glacier from the extensive network of walkways. Boat trips offer close-up views of glacier fronts on Lago Argentino and Lago Viedma. Hiking trails are available in designated areas, such as the Laguna Esmeralda trail (outside the main glacier access points). Ice trekking excursions on glaciers like Perito Moreno and Upsala are offered by authorized operators. Kayaking is possible on certain lakes.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the main visitor centers and parking areas, particularly at the Perito Moreno Glacier. Shade is limited in open viewing areas; some covered shelters are present. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is intermittent and generally unavailable within the core glacier viewing zones. Food vendors and cafes are located at the Perito Moreno Glacier visitor complex and in El Calafate.

Best Time to Visit

The best months for visiting are from October to April, during the Patagonian spring, summer, and early autumn. For photography, early morning or late afternoon light provides optimal illumination of the glaciers. High tide is not a relevant factor for glacier viewing. Weather can be variable year-round, with strong winds common.

Facts & Legends

The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of the few glaciers in the world that is advancing. Its advance periodically dams the southern arm of Lago Argentino, creating a natural dam. When the water pressure becomes too great, the dam ruptures in a spectacular event known as the "rupture of the Perito Moreno Glacier."
