Petco Park is a baseball stadium located in downtown San Diego, California. It serves as the home ballpark for Major League Baseball's San Diego Padres.
Visual Characteristics
The stadium features a distinctive asymmetrical design, incorporating the historic San Diego Gas & Electric building into its western facade. The primary materials are steel, concrete, and glass. The seating bowl is a mix of green and brown seats. The outfield features a large, multi-tiered structure with a grassy berm and a distinctive Western Metal Supply Co. building incorporated into the left-field corner.
Location & Access Logistics
Petco Park is situated at 100 Park Blvd, San Diego, CA 92101, approximately 1.6 km (1 mile) east of the San Diego Bay. Access is available via Interstate 5 (I-5) and State Route 94 (SR-94). Numerous parking garages are located in the surrounding East Village neighborhood, with rates varying by event. The San Diego Trolley Green Line has a dedicated stop, "Petco Park Station," directly adjacent to the stadium, serving multiple routes.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of Petco Park began in 2000 and was completed in 2004. The stadium was designed by HOK Sport (now Populous) and built by Clark Construction Group. Its original purpose was to provide a modern, downtown home for the San Diego Padres, replacing the aging Qualcomm Stadium. The site was previously occupied by industrial buildings and parking lots.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include attending San Diego Padres baseball games, concerts, and other special events. Visitors can explore the Park at the Park, a 2.7-hectare (6.7-acre) public park located behind the right-field wall, which includes a playground and open space. Tours of the stadium are available on non-game days.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The stadium offers a wide range of concessions, including local San Diego food vendors. Restrooms are located throughout all seating levels. Shade is available in various sections, particularly in the upper decks and suites. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally strong within the stadium.
Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit is during a San Diego Padres home game or a scheduled event. For photography of the stadium's architecture, late afternoon light provides good illumination on the exterior structures. The weather in San Diego is generally mild year-round, but spring and fall offer the most comfortable temperatures for outdoor events.
Facts & Legends
The Western Metal Supply Co. building, a historic 1909 structure, was preserved and integrated into the left-field corner of the stadium, housing premium seating, a restaurant, and a team store. It is the only remaining building from the original industrial complex that once occupied the site.
