Pfaffenthal Panoramic Elevator, Luxembourg City, Luxembourg, Europe
The Pfaffenthal Panoramic Elevator is a high-capacity public glass elevator that provides a vertical connection between the Pescatore Park in the Ville Haute (Upper Town) and the Pfaffenthal district in the Alzette Valley.
Visual Characteristics
The structure consists of a 65-meter-high steel tower with a fully glazed cabin. A prominent architectural feature is the cantilevered viewing platform at the upper level, which extends 9 meters out from the cliffside. The walkway features a glass floor section, offering a direct vertical view of the valley floor. The design is minimalist, utilizing white-coated steel and high-transparency glass to minimize visual impact on the historic valley landscape.
Location & Access Logistics
The upper entrance is located in Parc Pescatore (near the Fondation Pescatore), and the lower entrance is on Rue du Pont in Pfaffenthal.
Public Transport (Upper): Tram T1 stop "Fondation Pescatore" is 100 meters away.
Public Transport (Lower): A 5-minute walk from the Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg train and funicular station.
Cost: Free of charge for all users.
Capacity: The cabin can accommodate up to 66 pedestrians or 5 cyclists with their bicycles.
Historical & Engineering Origin
Inaugurated in July 2016, the elevator was designed by the firm Steinmetz De Meyer. The project was commissioned by the City of Luxembourg to promote soft mobility and better integrate the lower valley districts with the urban center. The engineering required anchoring the tower into the Luxembourgish sandstone cliffs while managing the high wind loads associated with the open valley.
Key Highlights & Activities
The elevator provides a 30-second transit that serves as a primary photography point. The upper platform offers 180-degree panoramic views of the Kirchberg Plateau, the Red Bridge (Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge), and the fortifications of the Bock. It is a critical link for cyclists commuting between the valley floor and the city center.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The facility is fully automated and operates daily from 05:45 to 01:00 (closed periodically for monthly maintenance). It features 5G cellular coverage and security cameras. The structure is entirely barrier-free, providing the most efficient accessible route between the two city levels for wheelchairs and strollers.
Best Time to Visit
Sunset is optimal for viewing the illumination of the Kirchberg Plateau and the Red Bridge. Early morning provides the clearest views of the Alzette River without peak-hour commuter traffic. Nighttime use offers a view of the city lights and the illuminated fortifications.
Facts & Legends
The elevator was a subject of local debate for over a decade before construction due to concerns about its impact on the UNESCO-protected landscape. Since its opening, it has become one of the city's most visited sites, moving over 3,000 people per day. The glass floor section on the upper bridge is frequently cited as a "test of nerves" for visitors with acrophobia.
