Visual Characteristics
The beach features fine, white sand and clear, turquoise waters. It is sheltered by a horseshoe-shaped volcanic rock formation, creating a natural lagoon. The surrounding landscape is arid, characterized by low-lying scrub vegetation and dark volcanic rocks.
Location & Access Logistics
Access to Playa de la Concha requires a boat transfer to Isla de Lobos from Corralejo, Fuerteventura. Ferries and water taxis depart regularly from Corralejo Harbour. Upon arrival at El Puertito on Isla de Lobos, the beach is approximately a 1.5km walk southwest along a marked trail. There is no vehicle access or parking on Isla de Lobos.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Isla de Lobos is a volcanic islet formed approximately 130,000 years ago. It is designated as a Natural Park (Parque Natural del Islote de Lobos) due to its unique ecosystem, which includes endemic plant species and a significant bird population. The beach itself is a natural formation within this volcanic landscape.
Key Highlights & Activities
Swimming in the shallow, calm waters is a primary activity. Snorkeling is possible, particularly around the rocky edges of the bay, to observe marine life. Sunbathing on the white sand is common. Hiking the circular trail around Isla de Lobos, which passes by the beach, is also a popular option.
Infrastructure & Amenities
There are no permanent restrooms or dedicated shade structures directly on Playa de la Concha. Basic toilet facilities are available near El Puertito, approximately 1.5km away. Best Time to Visit
The best time to visit is during the morning hours (9:00-11:00) for optimal sunlight and fewer crowds. The months from April to October offer the warmest weather and calmest sea conditions. The beach is accessible regardless of tide, but high tide provides slightly deeper swimming areas.
Facts & Legends
The name "Lobos" (wolves) refers to the monk seals (lobos marinos) that once inhabited the island. While these seals are no longer present, the island remains a protected haven. A permit is required to visit Isla de Lobos, which can be obtained online in advance, limiting daily visitor numbers to preserve its natural state.
