Plaza Independencia | Montevideo

Plaza Independencia is a central public square located in Montevideo, Uruguay. It serves as the primary dividing point between the Ciudad Vieja (Old City) and the downtown business district.

Visual Characteristics

The plaza is a large, rectangular space paved with granite. Its dominant feature is the Monumento a Artigas, a tall obelisk topped with a bronze sculpture of General José Gervasio de Artigas. The monument is surrounded by a circular pool. The perimeter of the plaza is lined with significant architectural structures, including the Palacio Salvo and the Palacio Estévez.
