Rajaji National Park, Haridwar, India, Asia
Rajaji National Park is a protected area located in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, encompassing parts of the districts of Haridwar, Dehradun, and Pauri Garhwal.
It is a significant wildlife sanctuary known for its diverse flora and fauna, particularly its elephant population.
Visual Characteristics
The park's terrain is characterized by hills, valleys, and riverine belts. Vegetation includes dense sal forests, mixed deciduous forests, and grasslands. The Ganges River flows through the park, creating alluvial plains. Elevation ranges from approximately 300 meters to over 1000 meters.
Location & Access Logistics
Rajaji National Park is situated approximately 15 kilometers from Haridwar city center. Access is primarily via National Highway 72 (NH 72), which passes close to the park's boundaries. The nearest major railway station is Haridwar Junction. The closest airport is Dehradun Airport (DED), about 50 kilometers away. Several entry gates exist, including Ramgarh, Mohand, and Dholkhand. Parking is available at designated entry points.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The park was established in 1983 by the amalgamation of three wildlife sanctuaries: Rajaji, Motichur, and Chilla. It was named after C. Rajagopalachari, a prominent leader of the Indian independence movement. Ecologically, it forms a critical corridor for wildlife movement between the Shivalik hills and the plains, and is part of the Terai-Arc Landscape.
Key Highlights & Activities
Jeep safaris are conducted on designated routes to observe wildlife. Birdwatching is a popular activity due to the park's avian diversity. Trekking is permitted on specific trails under ranger supervision. Elephant safaris are also offered in certain zones. The park is a crucial habitat for tigers, elephants, leopards, and various deer species.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Basic facilities are available at entry gates, including information centers and rest areas. Restrooms are present at major entry points and some safari rest houses. Cell phone signal is intermittent within the park. Food vendors are typically located outside the park gates; internal food options are limited to designated rest houses.
Best Time to Visit
The park is generally open from November 15th to June 15th. The best time for wildlife viewing is during the cooler months, from November to March, when vegetation is less dense. Early mornings and late afternoons offer optimal lighting conditions for photography.
Facts & Legends
Rajaji National Park is one of the few protected areas where the Asian elephant population is stable and increasing. A specific tip for visitors is to carry binoculars for better wildlife observation, especially for bird species.
