Ramparts Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium, Europe
Ramparts Cemetery is a Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) burial ground situated on top of the historic fortifications of Ypres, Belgium. It is unique for its elevated position overlooking the city moat and is one of the most frequently visited small cemeteries in the Ypres Salient.
Visual Characteristics
The cemetery is characterized by its linear, narrow layout necessitated by the shape of the ramparts. It features standard CWGC white Portland stone headstones arranged in rows against a backdrop of the ancient brick city walls. Mature trees provide a canopy over the site, and the "Cross of Sacrifice" is positioned prominently near the entrance. The cemetery offers clear views of the water-filled moat below.
Location & Access Logistics
The site is located at Rijselpoort (Lille Gate), approximately 1 km south of the Ypres Grote Markt. Access is via a flight of stairs or a ramp leading up from the street level at the Lille Gate. It is a 12-minute walk from the Ypres Railway Station. De Lijn bus lines serving the city center stop within 500 meters. There is no dedicated parking lot, but street parking is available on the nearby Rijselseweg.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The cemetery was used by British and Commonwealth troops between November 1914 and April 1918. Unlike many other cemeteries in the area, it was not created after the war through the concentration of graves; it remained largely intact as originally laid out during the conflict. It contains 198 burials, mostly from the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.
Key Highlights & Activities
Commemoration: Visitors can pay respects to the fallen, including several soldiers from the Maori Pioneer Battalion.
Rampart Walk: The cemetery is a key stop on the walking trail that circumnavigates Ypres along the 17th-century Vauban fortifications.
Photography: The site provides a unique perspective of the Lille Gate and the moat, especially effective during the changing seasons.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The cemetery is a quiet, open-air site with no on-site staff. While the ramparts themselves have paved paths, the interior of the cemetery consists of mown grass. Public restrooms are located 1 km away at the In Flanders Fields Museum. High-speed 5G cellular coverage is available.
Best Time to Visit
The cemetery is accessible 24 hours a day. Early morning provides a serene atmosphere with mist often rising from the moat. Autumn is particularly notable for the foliage of the trees lining the ramparts.
Facts & Legends
The cemetery is often referred to as "Lille Gate Cemetery" by locals and veterans. It survived the heavy shelling of the city better than many other structures because it was shielded by the massive thickness of the medieval and 17th-century earthworks.
