This site is the location of the Battle of Rio Nuevo, which occurred in 1658. It was a decisive engagement between English forces led by General Edward D'Oyley and Spanish forces attempting to reclaim Jamaica. The battle resulted in the expulsion of the remaining Spanish from the island. Ecologically, the area is part of Jamaica's coastal plain, characterized by tropical dry forest vegetation.

A local legend suggests that a Spanish treasure was buried near the battle site to prevent its capture by the English. Despite numerous searches, no such treasure has been officially found. The site is recognized as a National Heritage Trust location.
