Visual Characteristics
The campground features a mix of open grassy areas and wooded sections with mature deciduous trees. The James River bank consists of gravel and exposed rock. Campsites are generally flat and covered in mowed grass. The river's water color varies from brown to green depending on recent rainfall and sediment levels.
Location & Access Logistics

Turn right onto the unmarked gravel access road immediately after crossing the James River Bridge. The campground entrance is approximately 0.5 kilometers down this road. Parking is available at designated spots near the campground entrance and at individual campsites. No public transport services directly reach the campground.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The area was historically used for agricultural purposes before being designated as a public campground by the City of Lynchburg Parks and Recreation Department in the late 1970s. Ecologically, it is part of the Piedmont region, characterized by a temperate climate and a diverse riparian ecosystem supporting various plant and animal species.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include tent and RV camping. Fishing is permitted in the James River. Kayaking and canoeing are possible, with put-in points available at the campground. Hiking trails are present along the riverbank. Campfires are allowed in designated fire rings.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms with flush toilets are available. Several picnic tables and fire rings are provided at each campsite. Shade is available under the tree canopy in wooded areas. Cell phone signal (4G) is intermittent and generally weak within the campground. No food vendors are located on-site; visitors must bring their own supplies.
Best Time to Visit
The best months for camping are April through October, avoiding the coldest winter temperatures. Mid-morning and late afternoon offer the most favorable natural light for photography of the river and surrounding landscape. River access for boating is generally consistent year-round, though water levels can fluctuate significantly after heavy rain.
Facts & Legends
Local lore suggests that during the Civil War, Confederate soldiers used the riverbanks in this vicinity as a staging area. A specific historical oddity is the presence of remnants of old stone foundations, believed to be from a pre-Civil War era mill, partially visible near the river's edge during low water periods.
