Saanane Island National Park is situated approximately 2 kilometers west of the Mwanza city center. Access is primarily via boat transfer from the Mwanza Port. Regular boat services operate daily, with journey times averaging 15-20 minutes. Private boat hire is also available. There is no vehicle access to the island itself; parking is available at the Mwanza Port.

Saanane Island was designated as a game reserve in 1964 and later upgraded to a national park in 2013. Ecologically, it is part of the Lake Victoria basin, characterized by savanna-like vegetation adapted to the island environment. The island's geology consists of ancient Precambrian rocks.
