Sakonnet Lighthouse is an active aid to navigation situated at the mouth of the Sakonnet River in Little Compton, Rhode Island.
This lighthouse marks the eastern entrance to the Sakonnet River, guiding vessels into the waterway and away from the hazardous shoals of the Atlantic Ocean.
Visual Characteristics
The lighthouse is a cylindrical brick tower, painted white, with a black lantern room at the apex. It stands approximately 65 feet (20 meters) tall. The structure is topped with a red conical roof on the lantern room. A keeper's house, also constructed of brick and painted white, is attached to the base of the tower.

Sakonnet Lighthouse is located at the southern tip of Little Compton, Rhode Island, accessible via Sakonnet Point Road. The lighthouse is situated on a rocky promontory. Public access to the lighthouse grounds is restricted. The lighthouse is best viewed from the water or from the public access point at the end of Sakonnet Point Road, approximately 6 miles (9.7 km) south of the center of Little Compton. Parking is available at the Sakonnet Point public access area. No public transportation directly serves the lighthouse.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The current Sakonnet Lighthouse was constructed in 1885, replacing an earlier structure built in 1840. It was built by the United States Lighthouse Board. Its original purpose was to serve as a navigational aid for maritime traffic entering and exiting the Sakonnet River, a significant passage for fishing vessels and commercial shipping in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The site is characterized by rocky coastline and tidal influences.

Facts & Legends
During the construction of the original lighthouse in 1840, a significant storm damaged the foundation, requiring extensive repairs before the structure could be completed. The lighthouse was automated in 1950, and the last resident keeper departed shortly thereafter.
