Samendéni Dam, Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, Africa
Samendéni Dam is a concrete gravity dam located approximately 15 kilometers southwest of Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso.
Visual Characteristics
The dam structure is composed of reinforced concrete. Its crest measures 1,100 meters in length and 25 meters in height. The reservoir it creates, Lake Samendéni, is a body of water with variable depth depending on seasonal rainfall, typically appearing brown due to suspended sediment.
Location & Access Logistics
Access to Samendéni Dam is via the RN1 national road heading west from Bobo Dioulasso. After approximately 10 kilometers, turn south onto a paved secondary road (signposted for Samendéni). The dam is located at the end of this road, approximately 5 kilometers further. Parking is available on-site, adjacent to the dam structure. Public transport directly to the dam is limited; shared taxis (taxi-brousses) operating between Bobo Dioulasso and surrounding villages may pass near the turn-off, requiring a subsequent local arrangement or walk.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of Samendéni Dam commenced in 1977 and was completed in 1980. It was designed and built by the Chinese company China International Water & Electric Corporation (CWE). The dam's primary purpose is irrigation for agricultural development in the surrounding region and water supply for Bobo Dioulasso.
Key Highlights & Activities
Observation of the dam's engineering structure is possible from the crest road. The reservoir area offers opportunities for birdwatching. Fishing is permitted within the reservoir, subject to local regulations. Boat tours are not a standard offering.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are not consistently available at the dam site. Shade is minimal, primarily provided by sparse vegetation near the access road. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally weak to non-existent at the dam itself. Food vendors are not present at the dam; provisions should be made in Bobo Dioulasso.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season, from November to April, offers the most stable weather conditions. During this period, the reservoir levels are typically at their lowest, allowing for clearer views of the dam's base. The wet season (May to October) sees higher water levels but also increased cloud cover and potential for rain, impacting visibility and access.
Facts & Legends
A specific local legend suggests that the dam's construction was influenced by the presence of a rare aquatic plant believed to have medicinal properties, though this is unverified.
