Snowbasin was established in 1940. It was developed by the Union Pacific Railroad with the intention of promoting rail travel to the region. The resort is situated within the Wasatch-Cache National Forest, a region shaped by glacial activity and characterized by diverse montane ecosystems.

Snowbasin was a venue for the 2002 Winter Olympics, hosting the men's and women's downhill, super-G, and combined events. The resort's infrastructure, including the lodges, was significantly upgraded for the Olympic Games.
