The mansion was built between 1885 and 1887 for Mary Clark Thompson, widow of New York Senator and Secretary of the Treasury, William Henry Harrison Thompson. The gardens were developed in the early 20th century. The site is situated on glacial till deposits characteristic of the Finger Lakes region.
