The South Point Lighthouse is a historic navigational aid situated at the southernmost tip of Barbados in Christ Church. It marks a significant point on the island's coastline.

Visual Characteristics

Constructed from coral stone, the lighthouse stands at approximately 27 meters (89 feet) in height. It features a cylindrical tower painted white with a red lantern room at its apex. The structure exhibits a functional, utilitarian architectural style.

Location & Access Logistics

The lighthouse is located at the southern extremity of Barbados, approximately 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) south of Bridgetown. Access is via Highway 7, turning onto South Point Road. Ample parking is available adjacent to the site. Public transport options include bus route 11, which stops within a 500-meter walk of the lighthouse.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The original lighthouse was constructed in 1840 by the Barbados Railway Company to guide ships into Carlisle Bay. The current structure was built in 1900. The site is composed of coral rock formations, characteristic of Barbados's geological makeup.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can observe the lighthouse exterior and the surrounding coastal landscape. The area is suitable for photography, particularly during sunrise and sunset. Walking along the coastal paths provides views of the Atlantic Ocean.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the site. Limited shade is provided by natural vegetation. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally reliable in this area. No on-site food vendors are present, but facilities are available in nearby Oistins.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, the hours around sunrise (approximately 5:45 AM - 6:30 AM) and sunset (approximately 5:30 PM - 6:15 PM) offer optimal lighting conditions. The weather is generally consistent year-round, with the dry season from December to May offering the most predictable conditions.

Facts & Legends

A local anecdote suggests that the lighthouse's beam was once so powerful it could be seen from the neighboring island of St. Vincent on exceptionally clear nights. The coral stone used in its construction was quarried locally.
