The museum is a three-story Victorian-era house constructed primarily of red brick. It features a prominent wrap-around porch with white railings and decorative gingerbread trim. The roof is steeply pitched with several gables. The exterior paint is a light cream color with white trim. The property includes mature trees and formal gardens.

Location & Access Logistics

Limited street parking is available in the immediate vicinity. The nearest public transport stop is served by the KCATA bus route 11, with a stop approximately 400 meters (0.25 miles) west on Minnesota Avenue.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The house was built in 1887 for John and Mary B. Smith. It was later purchased by the Croatian Catholic Union in 1937 and served as a community center and orphanage. The building is an example of Queen Anne Victorian architecture. It was converted into a museum in 1985 to document the history of immigrants from Croatia, Slovenia, Poland, Hungary, and other Eastern European countries who settled in the Strawberry Hill neighborhood.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can tour the preserved rooms of the house, which are furnished with period artifacts. Exhibits detail the lives and contributions of Eastern European immigrants. The museum hosts cultural events and educational programs throughout the year. Photography is permitted within the museum's public areas.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available on the first floor. Limited shaded areas are present in the gardens. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available. No on-site food vendors are present, but dining options are available within a 1.6 km (1 mile) radius in the downtown Kansas City, Kansas area.

Best Time to Visit

The museum is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Spring and Fall offer pleasant outdoor conditions for exploring the grounds. The best time of day for exterior photography is late afternoon when the sun is lower in the sky, providing softer light on the brickwork.

Facts & Legends

A notable historical fact is that the house was one of the first in the area to have indoor plumbing and electricity. Local lore suggests that the house has a resident ghost, a former nun who worked at the orphanage, though this is unverified.
