Sunshine Skyway Bridge, Tampa, USA Florida, North America

The Sunshine Skyway Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge spanning Tampa-bay_tampa" class="underline">Tampa Bay in Florida, USA. It connects St. Petersburg, Florida, to Terra Ceia, Florida.

Visual Characteristics

The bridge features a distinctive yellow color for its main span. It is a concrete and steel structure with a total length of 4.1 miles (6.6 km). The main span consists of two 360-foot (110 m) tall concrete pylons supporting the roadway via 206 cables.

Location & Access Logistics

The bridge is accessible via Interstate 275 (I-275). It is located approximately 20 miles (32 km) south of downtown St. Petersburg and 30 miles (48 km) southwest of downtown Tampa. Ample parking is available at the rest areas located on both the north and south ends of the bridge. No public transport directly accesses the bridge itself, but local bus routes serve the general vicinity of the bridge approaches.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The current Sunshine Skyway Bridge was completed in 1987, replacing an older bridge that collapsed in 1980 after being struck by a freighter. The original bridge was completed in 1954. The current structure was designed by the engineering firm Figg & Bridge Engineers, Inc. The bridge spans a body of water that is part of the Gulf of Mexico's estuarine system.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can walk or cycle on designated pathways on the old bridge sections, now known as the Skyway Fishing Piers, located at both the north and south ends. Fishing is permitted from these piers. Observation areas are available at the rest stops for viewing the bridge and Tampa Bay. Birdwatching is also a common activity.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Restrooms are available at the north and south rest areas. Shade structures are present at the rest areas. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally available along the bridge and at the rest areas. Food vendors are not typically present directly on the bridge, but restaurants are located near the approaches in St. Petersburg and Palmetto.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, early morning or late afternoon provides optimal lighting conditions on the yellow structure. The best months for weather are generally from March to May and September to November, avoiding the peak summer heat and humidity. High tide is not a specific requirement for accessing the bridge or piers.

Facts & Legends

The original Sunshine Skyway Bridge was the site of a significant maritime disaster in 1980 when the freighter MV Summit Venture collided with a support pier, causing a 1,200-foot section to collapse into Tampa Bay, resulting in 35 fatalities. The current bridge was designed to withstand such impacts.
