Tambo Colorado is situated approximately 15 kilometers inland from the city of Pisco. Access is via the Pisco-Ayacucho highway (PE-26). The site is about a 30-minute drive from Pisco. Parking is available at the entrance to the archaeological complex. Public transport options are limited; hiring a taxi or arranging a private tour from Pisco is the most common method of access.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Construction of Tambo Colorado began during the reign of Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui in the 15th century and was completed under his successors. It was built by Inca masons and laborers. The site's original purpose was to serve as a royal estate, administrative center, and military outpost for controlling the region and facilitating troop movement along the Inca road system. The structures are built using local adobe bricks and stone.

A unique feature of Tambo Colorado is the presence of surviving painted friezes, which are rare for Inca sites. These colorful decorations, particularly the red and white geometric patterns, offer insight into Inca artistic practices.
