Thatcher Island Lighthouse, Gloucester, USA Massachusetts, North America

Thatcher Island Lighthouse is a dual-towered lighthouse located off the coast of Cape Ann, Massachusetts, USA.

It serves as a navigational aid for vessels approaching the Massachusetts Bay.

Visual Characteristics

The lighthouse complex consists of two octagonal granite towers, each 129 feet (39 meters) tall. The towers are painted white with black lantern rooms. The keepers' dwellings and other support buildings are constructed of granite and wood, also painted white.

Location & Access Logistics

Thatcher Island is situated approximately 3 miles (4.8 km) east of Rockport, Massachusetts. Access is exclusively by boat. Private boat charters or scheduled tours from Rockport Harbor are the primary means of reaching the island. There is no public ferry service. Landing is typically at a small dock on the leeward side of the island, weather permitting.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Construction of the first lighthouse on Thatcher Island began in 1771, making it one of the earliest lighthouses in the United States. The current granite towers were completed in 1843. The island itself is a glacial drumlin, a streamlined hill formed by glacial ice. It supports a maritime ecosystem with coastal vegetation.

Key Highlights & Activities

Visitors can explore the grounds surrounding the lighthouse towers. Guided tours of the lighthouse interiors are sometimes available, depending on volunteer staffing. Birdwatching is a common activity due to the island's location on migratory routes. Observation of the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding coastline is also a primary draw.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Limited amenities are present. Basic restroom facilities may be available during staffed periods. There is no consistent cell phone signal (4G/5G) on the island. No food vendors or shops operate on Thatcher Island; visitors must bring all necessary supplies.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for a visit is during the warmer months, from May through October, when boat access is most reliable and weather conditions are generally favorable. Mid-morning offers good lighting for photography of the towers. High tide is generally preferred for boat landings.

Facts & Legends

Thatcher Island was named after Reverend Peter Thatcher, a minister from Boston who was shipwrecked on the island in 1635. A notable historical oddity is that the two towers were originally intended to be different heights to avoid confusion with other lighthouses, but they were built to the same height.
