Vianden Castle (Château de Vianden) is one of the largest and most significant feudal residences of the Romanesque and Gothic periods in Europe. It is situated on a rocky promontory overlooking the town of Vianden and the Our River.

Vehicle: Reachable via the N10. Large public parking lots are located at the base of the hill in the town.

Chairlift: A seasonal chairlift (Télésiège) connects the town center to a viewpoint above the castle, providing downhill pedestrian access.

Pedestrian: Access involves a steep, paved climb through the medieval streets of the upper town.

Public Transport: Accessible via train to Ettelbruck, then bus Line 180 or 181 to Vianden.

Historical & Structural Origin

Constructed between the 11th and 14th centuries on the foundations of a Roman castellum and a Carolingian refuge, the castle was the seat of the powerful Counts of Vianden. In 1820, under the reign of King William I of the Netherlands, the castle was sold piece-by-piece and fell into a state of ruin. In 1977, the Grand Ducal family transferred the property to the State, which conducted a massive, decades-long restoration to return it to its 18th-century appearance.

While an elevator provides access to several levels, the historic nature of the site involves numerous steps and uneven stone floors, making full accessibility difficult for those with limited mobility.

Facts & Legends

The castle was once the ancestral home of the House of Nassau-Vianden, ancestors of the current Dutch Royal Family and the Grand Ducal Family of Luxembourg. Victor Hugo, who lived in exile in Vianden in 1871, was a vocal advocate for the preservation of the ruins. Legend claims that the "White Lady of Vianden" appears in the window of the chapel before the death of a member of the ruling house.
