This location is characterized by its long stretch of white sand and clear turquoise waters.

Visual Characteristics

The beach features fine, white coral sand. The water exhibits shades of blue and green, varying with depth and sunlight. Coconut palms line the shore, providing natural shade. The coastline is generally flat with gentle slopes into the ocean.

Location & Access Logistics

Vumawimbi Beach is situated approximately 15 kilometers north of Chake-Chake, the main town on Pemba Island. Access is via the paved road leading towards Msuka. From the main road, a dirt track extends for approximately 2 kilometers to the beach. Limited parking is available at the track's end. Public transport to the vicinity is infrequent; local dala-dalas (minibuses) operate on the main road, requiring a subsequent walk or taxi hire. Boat access is also possible from nearby villages.

Historical & Ecological Origin

Vumawimbi Beach is a natural formation, part of the coral reef system surrounding Pemba Island. The sand is derived from the erosion of coral skeletons. The area is an active marine ecosystem, supporting various fish species and marine invertebrates.

Key Highlights & Activities

Swimming is possible in the calm waters. Snorkeling can be undertaken near the reef formations, particularly at high tide. Beachcombing for shells is a common activity. Observing local fishing practices is also an option.

Infrastructure & Amenities

Basic, open-air food stalls operated by local vendors are sometimes present, offering grilled fish and beverages. There are no permanent restroom facilities. Shade is primarily provided by coconut trees. Cell phone signal (2G/3G) is intermittent.

Best Time to Visit

The best time for clear water visibility is during the dry seasons, from June to October and December to February. Mid-morning offers good lighting for photography. High tide is recommended for swimming and snorkeling to ensure sufficient water depth.

Facts & Legends

Local folklore suggests that the waters off Vumawimbi Beach are protected by ancestral spirits, contributing to the area's pristine condition. A specific tip for visitors is to carry sufficient water and snacks, as amenities are minimal.
