The area was historically utilized for timber harvesting and cranberry farming. The park was established to preserve the unique pine barrens ecosystem and provide recreational opportunities. Ecologically, it is part of the New Jersey Pine Barrens, a National Reserve, known for its sandy soil, low nutrient levels, and specialized flora and fauna adapted to acidic conditions.
