The terrain is gently rolling with some steeper ravines. The forest floor is covered in leaf litter and exposed root systems.

Location & Access Logistics

Wesselman Woods is situated at 551 N. Boeke Road, Evansville, IN 47711. It is approximately 3 miles west of the Evansville city center. Access is directly from Boeke Road. A dedicated parking lot with capacity for approximately 50 vehicles is available at the main entrance. Public transport options include the METS Bus Line 12, which stops at the intersection of Boeke Road and Lincoln Avenue, a 0.2-mile walk from the preserve entrance.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The land was originally part of a larger tract owned by the Wesselman family. In 1972, it was designated as a nature preserve to protect its old-growth forest ecosystem. Ecologically, it represents a remnant of the original forest that once covered the Ohio River Valley, providing habitat for diverse plant and animal species.

Key Highlights & Activities

Hiking is permitted on marked trails, including the 1.5-mile Woodland Trail and the 0.75-mile Ravine Trail. Birdwatching is a common activity due to the variety of avian species present. Educational programs are offered by the preserve's nature center. Photography of flora and fauna is permitted.

Infrastructure & Amenities

A nature center building provides restrooms and educational exhibits. Shaded areas are available throughout the forest. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available within the preserve. No food vendors are located within the preserve; however, commercial establishments are present along nearby Lincoln Avenue.

Best Time to Visit

For optimal lighting for photography, early morning (7:00 AM - 9:00 AM) or late afternoon (4:00 PM - 6:00 PM) is recommended. The months of April through October offer the most favorable weather conditions for outdoor activities. The pond is at its fullest during spring and after significant rainfall.

Facts & Legends

Wesselman Woods is one of the largest urban old-growth forests in the United States. A local anecdote suggests that during Prohibition, a hidden still was once operated within the deeper ravines of the preserve.
