West End Village, Roatan, Honduras, North America
West End Village is a coastal settlement located on the western tip of Roatan Island, Honduras. It serves as a primary hub for tourism and local commerce on the island.
Visual Characteristics
The village consists of a linear arrangement of structures, primarily constructed from wood and corrugated metal, painted in various colors. Buildings are generally low-rise, with most not exceeding two stories. The coastline features sandy beaches interspersed with coral rock formations. The water clarity is high, revealing coral reefs close to shore.
Location & Access Logistics
West End Village is situated approximately 12 kilometers west of Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport (RTB). Access from the airport is typically via taxi or pre-arranged shuttle service, a journey of about 20-30 minutes along the main island road. Within West End, vehicular traffic is limited on the main beach road; movement is primarily by foot, water taxi, or golf cart. Parking is available in designated lots at the eastern and western entrances to the village, with limited on-street availability.
Historical & Ecological Origin
Historically, West End developed as a fishing village and later as a center for the Garifuna people. Its current form is largely a result of tourism development beginning in the late 20th century. Ecologically, the area is situated along the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System, contributing to its marine biodiversity.
Key Highlights & Activities
Activities include scuba diving and snorkeling at nearby reef sites such as Half Moon Bay and numerous dive operations. Kayaking and paddleboarding are available. The main beach road offers access to shops and restaurants. Boat tours to other parts of the island, including the Cayos Cochinos, depart from the West End docks.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at most restaurants and dive shops. Shade is provided by palm trees and awnings. Cell phone signal (4G) is generally available throughout the village. Food vendors and restaurants are concentrated along the main beach road.
Best Time to Visit
The dry season, from March to June, offers the most consistent weather. For underwater visibility, the period between April and September is optimal. Sunrise and sunset provide direct sunlight on the western-facing coastline.
Facts & Legends
A local legend suggests that pirates once used the coves around West End as a base for their operations. The area is known for its significant population of green iguanas, often seen basking in the sun.
