Wind River Canyon Scenic Byway, Thermopolis, USA Wyoming, North America
The Wind River Canyon Scenic Byway is a designated route traversing a significant geological formation in central Wyoming. It is located near Thermopolis, Wyoming.
Visual Characteristics
The byway follows the Wind River as it cuts through a canyon characterized by exposed sedimentary rock layers. Rock colors range from tan and grey to red and orange, displaying distinct stratification. Canyon walls rise vertically, with varying degrees of vegetation, primarily scrub brush and hardy grasses. The Wind River itself is typically a turbid, grey-brown color due to suspended sediment.
Location & Access Logistics
The byway is accessible from Thermopolis, Wyoming. State Highway 20 (US-20) serves as the primary access route. The byway begins approximately 3 miles south of Thermopolis and extends for 18 miles. Parking is available at designated pull-offs and overlooks along the highway. No public transport services operate directly along the byway.
Historical & Ecological Origin
The canyon's formation is a result of fluvial erosion, where the Wind River has incised through uplifted sedimentary rock over millions of years. The exposed rock layers represent geological periods dating back to the Paleozoic Era, offering a cross-section of ancient environments. The area is ecologically classified as a semi-arid canyon environment.
Key Highlights & Activities
Driving the byway provides access to multiple overlooks for geological observation. Hiking is permitted on designated trails originating from some pull-offs. Fishing in the Wind River is possible in designated areas. Rockhounding is permitted in certain zones, subject to state regulations.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available at the Wind River Canyon Visitor Center, located at the southern end of the byway. Shade is limited to natural rock overhangs and the visitor center. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is intermittent to non-existent within the canyon. No food vendors are present along the byway; visitors should carry provisions.
Best Time to Visit
For optimal lighting on the rock formations, early morning or late afternoon is recommended. The best months for visiting are May through October, avoiding winter conditions which can include snow and ice. The river's water level and clarity can vary seasonally.
Facts & Legends
The Wind River Canyon is one of the deepest river canyons in the United States. Local Native American legends speak of the canyon as a place of spiritual significance, with stories passed down through generations concerning its creation and the spirits that inhabit it.
