The museum is a neoclassical palace characterized by its prominent exterior terrace and the modern "Soravia Wing" canopy, a titanium-and-aluminum structure that marks the entrance. The exhibition spaces are characterized by a transition from these historical rooms to modern, white-cube galleries.

The palace was built in the 1740s and later gifted to Duke Albert of Saxe-Teschen, a son-in-law of Empress Maria Theresa, in 1794. The Duke founded the collection, which has grown into one of the most important graphic art repositories in the world. The building suffered significant damage during an aerial bombardment in 1945 and underwent a comprehensive restoration and modernization project completed in 2003.
