Historical Origin
Commissioned by Emperor Franz Joseph I to house the Habsburgs’ massive natural history collections, the museum was built between 1871 and 1889. It was designed by architects Gottfried Semper and Karl von Hasenauer. The collection's core dates back to 1750, when Emperor Francis I Stephen purchased the world's then-largest natural history collection.
