Altes Schloss, Stuttgart, Germany, Europe

Altes Schloss (Old Castle) is a medieval castle complex and the former residence of the Counts and Dukes of Württemberg. It is situated in the heart of Stuttgart, adjacent to Schlossplatz.

Visual Characteristics

The castle is a massive, four-winged Renaissance structure characterized by its inner courtyard with tiered arcades. Its exterior features cylindrical corner towers and thick defensive walls. The architecture reflects the transition from a medieval water fortress to a prestigious ducal residence. The courtyard is noted for its acoustic quality and the equestrian statue of Count Eberhard the Bearded.

Location & Access Logistics

Located at Schillerplatz 6, 70173 Stuttgart.

Public Transit: Served by Schlossplatz (U5, U6, U7, U12, U15) or Charlottenplatz (U1, U2, U4, U11).

Access: The inner courtyard is accessible to the public during daytime hours. Entry to the museum requires a paid ticket.

Hours: Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Closed on Mondays.

Historical & Ecological Origin

The site originated as a 10th-century "Stutengarten" (stud farm) and was expanded into a water castle in the 14th century. The current Renaissance form was established in the 16th century by Duke Christoph of Württemberg. Following significant damage in WWII, it was reconstructed by 1971. It now houses the Landesmuseum Württemberg (State Museum of Württemberg).

Key Highlights & Activities

Landesmuseum Württemberg: Features the Württemberg Crown Jewels, the regional archaeological collection, and the "Legendary Württemberg" exhibition.

Castle Chapel (Schlosskirche): One of the first Protestant church buildings in Germany, containing the tombs of Duke Christoph and his wife.

Glass Collection: One of the most significant glass collections in Europe.

Junges Schloss: A specialized children's museum located within the complex.

Infrastructure & Amenities

The facility includes a museum shop and the Schloss-Café in the courtyard. The museum is equipped with elevators and is wheelchair accessible. Public restrooms are available for museum patrons. 5G signal is robust.

Best Time to Visit

Christmas Market (December): The courtyard serves as a highly atmospheric venue for choral concerts and market stalls.

Thursday Afternoons: Typically less crowded than weekends.

Facts & Legends

A technical oddity is the "Reitertreppe" (Rider’s Staircase), designed with shallow, wide steps to allow the Dukes to ascend to the upper floors while remaining on horseback. Legend suggests that the spirit of a "White Lady" haunts the corridors, appearing only to foretell major changes in the ducal lineage.
