Visual Characteristics
The castle is a massive, four-winged Renaissance structure characterized by its inner courtyard with tiered arcades. Its exterior features cylindrical corner towers and thick defensive walls. The architecture reflects the transition from a medieval water fortress to a prestigious ducal residence. The courtyard is noted for its acoustic quality and the equestrian statue of Count Eberhard the Bearded.

Historical & Ecological Origin
The site originated as a 10th-century "Stutengarten" (stud farm) and was expanded into a water castle in the 14th century. The current Renaissance form was established in the 16th century by Duke Christoph of Württemberg. Following significant damage in WWII, it was reconstructed by 1971. It now houses the Landesmuseum Württemberg (State Museum of Württemberg).

Facts & Legends
A technical oddity is the "Reitertreppe" (Rider’s Staircase), designed with shallow, wide steps to allow the Dukes to ascend to the upper floors while remaining on horseback. Legend suggests that the spirit of a "White Lady" haunts the corridors, appearing only to foretell major changes in the ducal lineage.
