AQWA was established in 1997. Its purpose is to showcase the diverse marine life of Western Australia's extensive coastline, from the Abrolhos Islands in the north to the southern coast. The exhibits are designed to represent various Western Australian marine ecosystems, including coral reefs, kelp forests, and the open ocean.

Visitors can observe sharks, stingrays, and large fish in the 3 million liter Ocean Tank via the underwater tunnel. Other activities include a touch pool experience with starfish and sea cucumbers, and viewing exhibits dedicated to jellyfish, seahorses, and the unique flora and fauna of the Kimberley region. Dive demonstrations occur daily in the main tank.
