Public transport options include Transperth bus routes 346 and 350, which stop at the Hillarys Boat Harbour terminus.
Historical & Ecological Origin
AQWA was established in 1997. Its purpose is to showcase the diverse marine life of Western Australia's extensive coastline, from the Abrolhos Islands in the north to the southern coast. The exhibits are designed to represent various Western Australian marine ecosystems, including coral reefs, kelp forests, and the open ocean.
Key Highlights & Activities
Visitors can observe sharks, stingrays, and large fish in the 3 million liter Ocean Tank via the underwater tunnel. Other activities include a touch pool experience with starfish and sea cucumbers, and viewing exhibits dedicated to jellyfish, seahorses, and the unique flora and fauna of the Kimberley region. Dive demonstrations occur daily in the main tank.
Infrastructure & Amenities
Restrooms are available throughout the facility. Shaded areas are provided within the exhibits and in outdoor seating zones. Cell phone signal (4G/5G) is generally reliable within the building. Food and beverage services are available at the on-site café.
Best Time to Visit
The best time of day for viewing is during feeding times for the larger marine animals, which are scheduled daily. For optimal lighting on the exterior and surrounding harbour, late afternoon is recommended. The facility is open year-round, with no specific tidal dependencies for viewing.
Facts & Legends
A unique aspect of AQWA is its focus on the conservation of Western Australian marine species, including the critically endangered Western Swamp Tortoise. The facility actively participates in breeding programs for several species.
