Arion Fountain, Olomouc, Czech Republic, Europe
The Arion Fountain (Arionova kašna) is the most recent addition to the historical set of Baroque fountains in Olomouc. Completed in 2002, it fulfills a centuries-old plan to decorate the city with a fountain inspired by the legend of the Greek poet Arion.
Visual Characteristics
The fountain features an oval pool recessed below the pavement level. It is decorated with several bronze sculptures by the Olomouc native Ivan Theimer, including a large turtle carrying an obelisk and a group of figures representing Arion saved by a dolphin. The sculptures are characterized by detailed engravings of historical maps, shells, and ancient scripts.
Location & Access Logistics
Address: Horní náměstí, 779 00 Olomouc.
Location: Situated in the southwest corner of the Upper Square (Horní náměstí), near the Town Hall.
Access: Located in a pedestrian zone.
Transit: Tram lines 2, 3, 4, 6 (stop "Náměstí Hrdinů") followed by a 400m walk.
Historical & Artistic Origin
While the other six fountains in Olomouc are Baroque (17th–18th century), the Arion Fountain was only realized after the fall of communism. The city commissioned Ivan Theimer, a renowned sculptor living in France, to complete the set. The fountain was inaugurated in September 2002. Unlike its historical counterparts, it was designed to be interactive and accessible to the public.
Key Highlights & Activities
Interactive Design: The fountain is unique in that it is designed for children and visitors to enter the water or sit on the bronze turtle.
Symbolism: The obelisk on the turtle's back contains symbols of Olomouc and its history.
The "Separate" Turtle: A smaller bronze turtle is located several meters away from the main pool, serving as a popular photo spot and climbing object for children.
Infrastructure & Amenities
The fountain is an open-air public installation with 24/7 access. The surrounding square is paved with flat stones, providing full wheelchair accessibility. 5G signal is stable. Public restrooms are available in the adjacent Town Hall.
Best Time to Visit
The fountain is most active during the summer months when children are permitted to play in the water. Evening lighting highlights the bronze textures of the sculptures. During the winter, the water is drained, but the bronze sculptures remain on display.
Facts & Legends
A verified technical fact is that the fountain uses a modern circulation and filtration system hidden beneath the square to maintain water quality. The legend of Arion, which the fountain depicts, tells of a poet thrown overboard by sailors and saved by a dolphin enchanted by his music; Theimer chose this theme to symbolize the power of art and its survival through history.
